Hello Grade ¾ families in Room 2,

It was a short but beautiful week in our classroom. We have been getting to know each other, building connections and new friendships, reconnecting with familiar classmates, and creating our learning community. It was great to meet everyone at the Open House. If we have not yet connected, I look forward to doing so soon.

One highlight from our first week was our hexagon art project. Students created colourful hexagons representing six unique things about themselves, their favourite things, and what they did over the summer. We then connected them to others’ hexagons to physically show all the similarities and connections we have to one another. It was such a powerful way for the class to see how much they have in common, and create a strong sense of community right from the start.

We also did a STEM solo cup building challenge. In groups students worked together to complete challenges using cups and sticks to build the tallest tower. Students showed some great teamwork as they communicated and listened to each other’s ideas. They definitely had their engineering hats on.

We have been reviewing place value and learning some old and new math games. Our math time has been fun as we learn to share our math thinking through number/math talks. Ask your student to share the silent signals we use during math talks.

We have started a fun writing activity, creating a ‘Failed Project’. We read The Barnabus Project, a fun story about a group of failed pet experiments, who break out of a lab and learn to celebrate their imperfectness. Students began to brainstorm what their “failed creature” would look, act, sound, and be like. Next week, we will begin a rough draft of our first story of the year!

Ideas to continue the learning at home:

  • Encourage your students to read each day, choosing books that interest them

  • Have a family building challenge using materials around the house

  • Have your student name place value digits when they come across a numeral (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands)

Reminders:

  • Corn Roast is September 11 at 4:30PM

I look forward to getting to know our class even better as we continue to learn together. Please reach out if you ever have any questions or news to share- I love to stay in contact.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Jocelyn
