We had a busy week, welcoming the Fall Equinox, enjoying the brisk morning weather, and learning more about our role as treaty people as we discussed Treaty 7 Day on September 22.
We are enjoying our novel study- Chasing Vermeer. Today, Home Communication Folders have come with students and in it there is an activity to complete together. This is an opportunity to continue the learning at home through conversation, as well as give students a chance to share their writing with you.
We met with our buddy class, Ms. Axford’s 1/2 ‘s, twice this week. We are enjoying getting to know them better and showing how we can be leaders as we learn together. Today we completed a collaborative reflection activity based on a book both classes have read this week- Nii Sookayis- My Suitcase, by Christina Fox.

Grade 3:
I can discuss the reasons treaties were negotiated and signed.
I can identify treaties on a map of Alberta.
Grade 4:

I can discuss ways relationships were built between First Nations and Europeans.
This week, we continued our discussion around maps and the students shared some great insights and wonders about various maps of Canada and Alberta. Additionally, we celebrated Treaty 7 Day on Monday by learning and practicing to name Calgary in the various languages of the First Nations communities whose traditional territories are in Treaty 7. We continued our learning by representing what it means to be a treaty person and how we are caring for the Treaty 7 land in our visual journals.

As a class we have made a lot of progress with understanding and representing place value and their corresponding digits, showing numbers in word form, expanded form, and as base ten models. Next week, Grade 4 will begin exploring decimals, including tenths and hundredths. Grade 3 continues to practice naming and representing numbers. We learned how each group of numbers lives in a “house” on the same street. The ones, tens, and hundreds live together, and the thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands live together. Ask your student to show you what the house looks like!
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3/4
I can extend brush skills and further experimentation with the medium so as to achieve special effects such as textures.
I can mix paints to show intensity of colour.
We kicked off our Art Cards project this week. Students are creating torn paper mountain landscapes, using acrylic paint to blend colours and ripping paper to create texture. We used a fun online tool to help us create our own unique colour recipes for our background and mountain colours. This also gave us the opportunity to practice our digital citizenship using tech for the first time! Students recorded their colour recipes on paper and began painting this morning. It was a busy and engaging time as we worked hard towards creating our unique mountain landscapes.
