This week in Grade ¾ we took advantage of the beautiful weather and sunshine. We took our learning outside as much as we could, spending some time learning about scientific sketches. We observed a special tree in our school yard and took time to observe, label, and make wonder statements about it. We will check in to notice changes throughout the year.
We began our first novel study- Chasing Vermeer. We are using our detective skills to solve a mystery involving pentominoes- a new math tool that we are loving exploring!
We celebrated our first Star Student of the week. This program helps to build our classroom community, and was a highlight of the week. Each student will have a chance to be Star Student, and all that comes with it, throughout the year.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3
I can reflect on how conducting an investigation contributes to building knowledge.
I can develop new questions for further investigations.
Grade 4
I can draw conclusions, using reliable and valid evidence from investigations.
We continued to learn about the steps involved in the scientific method, from deciding on a question to investigate, researching, hypothesizing, experimenting, observing and drawing conclusions. We applied our knowledge to an experiment when we made OOBLECK! We learned oobleck reacts differently based on the pressure applied to it. Next, we will apply our learning of the properties of oobleck to investigate the three states of matter. We look forward many more experiments to come!
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can discuss reasons treaties were negotiated and signed.
Grade 4:
I can reflect on personal rights and responsibilities.
As a part of a whole school commitment, we have developed a class agreement, or class treaty. We have learned about the importance of treaty and responsibilities of treaty signing. We learned the Blackfoot word for treaty, and each member of our class made a treaty medallion to signify our commitment to establishing and maintaining a positive, kind, and respectful learning environment. We reference our classroom agreement each morning during our class meeting. Next, we will be developing our mapping skills as we investigate treaties within Canada and begin our learning of important landmarks.
We are working hard to continue learning about place value. We have learned a few new math games including Race to 100 with base ten blocks. We have focused on representing numbers in picture form, word form, and expanded form.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Practice correctly saying numbers up to 999,999
Have your student show you ways to represent numbers in expanded form (5738=5000+700+30+8)
Upcoming Dates:
September 22- Walking Trip to Foundations for the Future academy (our emergency evacuation site) We will be walking with our Grade 1/2 buddies.
September 26- Orange Shirt Day at TRS
