Hello families,
The Grade 3 and 4’s had another exciting week of learning.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can analyze bases and affixes for meaning.
Grade 4:
I can examine morphemes in words to determine meaning.
We continued our morphology lessons by exploring the “doubling rule”. Students practiced adding various suffixes (-er, -ed, -est, -ing, -ly, -ful) to base words that changed their spelling depending on their specific phonemic/morphological rules. We learned about the doubling rule, where we double the last consonant prior to adding a suffix if it follows certain morphological rules.
We spent a lot of time this week working on our narrative writing skills. We used a photo prompt to develop a story that has a character, a setting, and a problem and solution. Together, we created a rubric to improve our writing. We look forward to sharing our writing piece with you soon.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can round natural numbers up to 1000
Grade 4:
I can round natural numbers up to 100,000
We continued our look at number and place value as we worked on rounding this week. Students showed perseverance and using “the power of yet” as we worked through this new concept. Looking forward to our addition unit, we warmed up our math minds with a new math game- “dice war”.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can identify local First Nations languages.
I can explore stories about symbols of diverse communities in Alberta.
I can investigate oral traditions that have been shared over time.
Grade 4:
I can discuss ways relationships were built between First Nations and Europeans.
I can describe connections to time and people revealed through oral traditions.
This week, we spent some time discussing the historical significance of Remembrance Day. We also learned about how Indigenous Veterans Day is marked on November 8th. In particular, we explored the role of Cree Code Talkers in WWII and how their legacy has been largely unknown. Students examined the role of Code Talkers by investigating how the Cree language was used in clever ways to represent English words. For example sakimes (mosquito) and pahkitewaciy (explosion) together meant mosquito bomber. Additionally, we read a poem written by a descendant of Code Talkers that discussed his relatives' experiences giving up their status in order to enlist. We shared our learning by creating some “I wonder” statements. We also worked collaboratively to build a beautiful poppy wreath that two student leaders laid at the ceremony today.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Reading: When reading, have your student search for words with prefixes and suffixes and point them out to you.
Math: We continue to refine our rounding skills. We have enjoyed this song to remind us of the rounding rules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNfz-JU2cKE
Ask your student to show you the tricks to rounding using the rap song we learned:
We will, we will, round you, round you.
Circle your place, look next door, five or greater, add 1 more.
Numbers in front, stay the same.
Numbers behind, zero’s your name.
Reminders:
Fall Break next week - classes resume on Thursday, November 13th.
Swimming at Churchill Pool- November 17-21. Please return swimming forms as soon as possible
Please remind your student to return their library books prior to Thursday every week. We have a few overdue books that Mrs. Bouchard would like back ASAP.
We take our learning outside often so please make sure to be dressed for the weather.
I am also excited to share that we will have a student teacher joining our class, beginning Nov 13 and staying with us until winter break. Mr. Ben Chalk comes to us from the University of Lethbridge and is eager to join us.
See you soon,
Ms. Jocelyn
