Hello Grade ¾ families,
We had a wonderful week of learning, welcoming the snowy weather and gearing up for Winter. It was lovely to see so many of you at conferences last night and this morning. Your insight and collaboration are invaluable and help us create the best possible learning environment for our students.
We explored the Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework, the medicine wheel, as we learned about the four domains and built a classroom framework to track our year. It was a beautiful art collaboration.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can describe solid, liquid, and gas states of matter in terms of the properties of shape and volume.
I can explain how matter can change state if heated or cooled.
Grade 4:
I can compare the different methods of waste management and discuss their environmental impacts.
I can develop a personal plan to reduce waste.
I can discuss local waste management programs.
I can represent a recycling process, using diagrams.
It was an exciting week of exploring technology as a tool to help our learning. Grade 4’s are exploring waste management resources online and sharing their learning, including a personal commitment to waste management, using Google Slides. They are already showing creativity in the ways they are sharing. Grade 3’s have been continuing their states of matter learning with Mr. Chalk, and exploring enrichment on the Google Classroom.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can use estimation to add when an exact sum is not needed or to check my answer
Grade 4:
I can use estimation to check the reasonableness of my sum when adding.
We used our rounding skills as we learned the importance of estimating this week. Students completed an “exit slip” to share their understanding. It is important to be able to transfer these skills as we move forward in our learning. We had fun trying out some “estimysteries”. Next week we are beginning our math rotations, where targeted math skills will be helpful as we begin using the standard algorithm for addition.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Use this link to play a fun game estimating sums and basic addition facts https://www.roomrecess.com/mobile/AstroBlaster/play.html
