Thank you for your support during swimming lessons this week. It was definitely a highlight of the year so far. I loved seeing the smiles in the pool! We still managed to fit a lot of learning in, as we began learning about procedural writing, continued learning about mental math addition strategies, and best of all, had our Chasing Vermeer mystery art sharing circle.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can participate in presentations as a respectful audience member
I can make connections between between a text and personal feelings, experiences, or background knowledge
Grade 4:
I can participate in presentations as a respectful audience member
I can present information that engages, informs, persuades, or entertains an audience
I can create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes
Thank you for supporting this task by sending in the art- it led to such an authentic opportunity to write and share. We began by keeping our chosen art piece a secret, and writing a descriptive paragraph about it using figurative language. Students had beautiful writing filled with imagery as they shared descriptions of their art. The next day, we looked at a collage of all the pieces, and had a sharing circle to read our paragraph. We matched descriptions to photos like a puzzle.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can conduct an investigation to demonstrate changes of state.
I can describe solid, liquid, and gas states of matter in terms of the properties of shape and volume
Grade 4:
I can collect reliable data during investigations
I can collect valid data by accurately using tools or technology during investigations
I can represent evidence from an investigation in a variety of ways
We had a week of investigation and experimenting as we explored how states of matter can change. This morning the scientists of Room 2 set out to find the quickest way to melt ice. Throughout the week we brainstormed materials that would accelerate the process, followed by making individual hypotheses, and lastly conducting experiments in small groups. Students showed excellent collaboration and teamwork as they did this. Next week, we will explore ways to share the data from our experiments by sharpening up our graphing skills.
We began learning about estimation as students explored how it can be useful. We began our week with a candy estimation, where students estimated the amount of candy in a jar. Students were given a new clue each day to refine their estimation. We will be continuing estimation next week.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Continue to use our science minds around the house, identifying solids, liquids, and gases and looking for ways matter can change states.
Reminder and Updates:
Thursdays are library exchange day- please have books returned each week
November 27 (PM) and 28 AM) - Student Conferences
December 11- Photo Retakes and Winter Concert
Thank you and have a great weekend,
Ms. Jocelyn
