Our literacy time this week was busy as we made progress in our read aloud, Chasing Vermeer. Students have been listening for clues to solve the mystery in the story. While doing this, we are practicing taking our “jot notes”. Students have been working on identifying the story’s problem, plot, and character traits as we make our way through. We are focusing on making predictions and connecting clues as we put our literacy skills to use.

We had a new “poem of the week” to engage with this week. This was our second haiku about winter that we have worked with as we identify parts of speech, syllables, and other literary elements in the poem each morning. Students were excited to try out their own haikus. First, we brainstormed words about winter, and then we sorted them into parts of speech and counted syllables. Finally, students created beautiful art on their final drafts to accompany their poem.

We wrapped up procedural writing earlier in the week. Students did great using the success criteria to guide and edit their work. These were sent home Thursday, along with the latest math “show what you know”. We wrapped up addition for now, and are moving forward with mental math subtraction. Students have been engaging in math rotations, allowing for each group to be working at just the right level. They have been doing great with this.

This week we experienced our first regrouping into grade groups as we began new social studies units. Grade 3’s are learning with myself as we begin to explore the physical geography and unique features of Alberta. Grade 4’s were with Ms. Stetz and Ms. Aida investigating European voyagers and their reasoning for traveling the world, including John Cabot, Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain. We will continue this learning next week.

Thank you for everything and I look forward to seeing everyone next week.
