Hello Room 2 families,

It was a full week of learning in Grade ¾. We are continuing to try our best each day as we get into routines. During science time, Grade 4s have been working hard on their waste management presentations and have shown perseverance as they adjust to feedback each day. These will conclude with a self-assessment early next week. Green Team is in full swing, with a new classmate assigned each week to this leadership opportunity. Grade 3s have continued their states of matter learning with Mr. Chalk and have created a joint presentation as they learn to navigate the Google Classroom. They have been exploring freezing and boiling points, and using their number sense to compare and contrast these science facts. They also learned about reversible and irreversible changes.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can share my ideas in a clear way using first, next, then, last. I can write to instruct someone.

  • I can write sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a period.

  • I can add sensory details (how something tastes, smells, feels, looks like, sounds like) to keep my reader interested.

Grade 4:

  • I can share my ideas in a clear way using first, next, then, last. I can write to instruct someone.

  • I can write sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a period.

  • I can write sentences that start in different ways.

  • I can add sensory details (how something tastes, smells, feels, looks like, sounds like) to keep my reader interested.

Procedural writing has been one of our priorities this week. We have gone over the importance of being specific in our instructions, writing as if the reader does not know what you are talking about at all. First, students shared the steps of something they are experts at. Then, we ended the week by writing the steps of how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Last, our instructions will be put to the test next week.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can use estimation to add when an exact sum is not needed or to check my answer

  • I can add 2-digit and 3-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.

Grade 4:

  • I can use estimation to check the reasonableness of my sum when adding.

  • I can add multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm, including decimal numbers.

Our mathematician minds have been working hard as we continued to explore addition this week. We introduced the standard algorithm, including using base ten blocks to model why we sometimes need to regroup when adding. Building this understanding with manipulatives helps to add a strong understanding of the concept as students move into independent thinking and work.

Learning Intentions

Grade 3:

  • I can implement a variety of tactics in response to other participants and changing situations.

Grade 4:

  • I can transfer strategies and tactics across various physical activities.

This week in PE we learned about handball. We used our developing throwing and catching skills to navigate passing and catching with teammates. We also learned how to strategize with our team, showing teamwork and encouragement along the way.

Ways to continue the learning at home:

  • Have your student use their “talk moves” to share what regrouping is and when it is necessary.

  • Try out some 2 digit and 3 digit addition problems.

Reminders:

  • Picture retakes- December 11. Please let me know if you would like your child to have one.

  • Winter Concert- December 11 at 6pm. Students are to arrive and come to the classroom at 5:40pm.

  • Thursdays are our library exchange day. Our class has many overdue books, please make sure these come back.

As always, please reach out with any questions. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Ms. Jocelyn
