It was a busy week of learning that included TRS Family Friday, Buddies, and our last Alien Inline session. The authors of grade ¾ have been working hard on their Northern Alphabet writing and can't wait to share it with you this weekend. Today students brought home their Northern Alphabet writing pieces as well as a rubric. Take some time to read their story with them and find where they are on our rubric. Everyone worked very hard and should be proud of their work. We finished reading Chasing Vermeer today and wow!- we are shocked after reading the conclusion. It was a fun journey this week as we were left with a cliff hanger several times. Next week we will complete a final project about the novel.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can examine poetic structures that contribute to creative expression of ideas.
I can investigate words or phrases applied creatively in poetry.
Grade 4:
I can experiment with creating verse and free verse.
We continued learning about figurative language and poetry this week as we dove into the ways poetry can be used to express ourselves and connect with other people, places, ideas, or emotions. We are continuing to identify figurative language within poems and are impressively transferring these skills across all of our writing pieces. We practiced writing free verse poems about either our favourite animal or season. These are fun because we get to let go of what we thought were the poetry rules of rhyming.
In math this week we really focused on the subtraction standard algorithm, modelling the act of borrowing as we worked together in our table groups to build subtraction equations with our base ten blocks. Collaboratively with their group, each table assigned the roles of recorder, banker, and Linus the Minus. Students were able to explain their mathematical thinking and reasoning to each other as they worked together through each problem. Next week, we will have a math “show what you know” on subtraction standard algorithms.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can demonstrate directional movement in physical activity.
I can participate in physical activities that increase in complexity.
I can identify and implement personal strategies to overcome challenges in a variety of physical activities.

We wrapped up Alien Inline this week, and it was definitely a highlight of the week. Students showed bravery and overcame challenges as they tried new skills and movement patterns. The day ended with a disco dance party!
