January 9, 2026
It has been great to come together again as class, to share stories of our breaks, and settle back into routines this week. We worked on completing many of our projects from before the break, including our Northern Alphabet creative writing project and the accompanying art piece. We finished the art this morning and they are beautiful.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can use cursive handwriting to write some texts with appropriate letter formation, size, proportion, and slant.
Grade 4:
I can use cursive handwriting to write some texts with appropriate letter formation, size, proportion, and slant.
We briefly began exploring cursive writing during morning work time, and will continue next week. This gives a different creative opportunity to share ideas and express ourselves.
We are making our way through Chasing Vermeer and things are getting very interesting as we try to solve the mystery within. We had time to explore some challenges with our pentomino sets during morning work this week and loved it.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can formulate statistical questions for investigation.
I can collect data.
I can represent first-hand data in a bar graph with one-to-one correspondence.
I can describe the story that a representation of data tells about a collection of data in relation to a statistical question.
Grade 4:
I can engage in a statistical problem-solving process.
I can select an appropriate scale to represent data.
I can represent data in a graph, using many-to-one correspondence.
As a part of our morning routine this year, we have been playing an online word game called SPELLIE. We have mastered the “easy” option and have now moved onto the “medium” game. Each day, we tally our results. This week, we looked at the data we have been collecting all year and decided to turn it into a bar graph. Then, we learned more about statistical questions and came up with a question to ask our classmates. We tallied the frequency of each response and graphed that data as well. We will be returning to graphing and statistical analysis later in the year. We also reviewed regrouping and mental math strategies.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Practice writing the names of family members in cursive
Create a statistical question and poll friends and family, and then turn it into a graph
Continue to practice mental math strategies for addition and subtraction including counting on, counting back, and chunking
