The Grade ¾ students did fantastic leading the Pink Shirt Day Celebration of Learning. Students stepped into a number of roles as they ran the assembly, including tech assistants, emcees, musicians, poets, and more. As a school, we are so proud of them!
We also had the opportunity to try out snowshoeing this week and will hopefully get out there a few more times to enjoy the fresh snow.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can describe how natural events change Earth’s surface.
Grade 4:
I can analyze the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems.
We began studying Earth Systems for a new science unit. We are excited to learn the different ways we are supported by and connected to the earth’s systems. Grade 4s are diving into the earth’s spheres and grade 3s will be starting an inquiry project about natural events. As we make our way through these investigations, we find and explore connections to the Social Studies curriculum and how we live and learn together in responsible ways.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can relate multiplication to repeated addition.
I can investigate multiplication and division strategies.
Students in Grade 3 did great as they began their investigation into the ways multiplication and division are related by exploring visual representations of multiplication. They are working with the language of “___ groups of ___.” This is a great way to continue the learning at home as items, such as snacks, can be split into groups and represented with 2 multiplication and 2 division equations.
Grade 4:
I can describe triangles according to side length.
I can classify triangles as right, acute, or obtuse, using geometric properties related to angles.
I can classify quadrilaterals in a hierarchy according to geometric properties.
The students in grade 4 have been working to differentiate and classify 2D shapes in a new way and using the new vocabulary they have learned related to geometric properties. They have been doing great as they justify and engage in discourse around their classifications.
All students have been continuing work on their final polygon art piece. This is a fun chance to share their understanding in a variety of different ways. They look forward to sharing it with you at Student-Led Conferences.
Ways to Continue the Learning at Home:
Practice modeling multiplication and division with objects
Practice basic multiplication and division facts up to 12
Have your student teach you a math game using a deck of cards or dice
Ask your student to share the legacy of the historical figure they have been researching
